Australian Society for Concrete Pavements (ASCP) Holds Forum, Elects Officers

cid:image001.jpg@01C89CB6.F6FDD3B0The recently-formed Australian Society for Concrete Pavements (ASCP) held a well-attended and successful industry forum in Sydney on March 31, 2008.  Presenters from major contractors, the regional transport authority, and private consultants placed a high emphasis on quality in design, materials and construction.

The elected officials for ASCP are: Mark Hoskins (Leighton Contractors) as President and Tracy Edwards (Connell Wagner) as Vice-President.   ASCP is strongly backed by major sponsors, including the Roads & Traffic Authority (NSW), Abigroup Constructions, Leighton Contractors, Thiess, Maunsell, Macmahon Constructions, Connell Wagner, and Clark Equipment Sales.

The ASCP website development will be completed by the end of May, providing a resource centre for information on concrete pavements as well as many important member and industry services.  A temporary website for ASCP is:

http://www.concretepavements.com.au/

The next ASCP Forum will be held on June 16th, 2008 and will focus on lean mix concrete subbases.  Other presentations will take place related to heavy-duty concrete pavements and concrete pavement construction equipment.

Abstracts Deadline for 2nd Advanced Workshop Extended

The deadline for abstract submissions for the ISCP-Sponsored 2nd Workshop on “Advanced Characterization, Modeling, and Design of Concrete Pavements” has been extended to April 30, 2008. Each participant is expected to make a 10-minute presentation and lead a subsequent 10-minute group discussion on the presentation topic.

The workshop organizers, ISCP members Jeff Roesler and Lev Khazanovich, urge interested participants to contact them to express interest and to submit a short abstract before the extended due date. This workshop will be held on August 13-15, 2008, in Richmond, California, USA.  More information and online registration for this workshop can be found online at:

Deadline for Student Poster Board Submittal Approaches

Graduate and undergraduate college students are encouraged to submit their work for the Student Poster Board Competition at the 9th International Conference on Concrete Pavements, August 17 – 21, 2008 in San Francisco, California, USA.   The deadline for poster board submission is May 1, 2008.  Suitable topics may be in areas such as: innovative technologies in concrete pavement design, construction, materials, maintenance, performance, evaluation, rehabilitation, asset management, and others.

The best student poster board presentation at the conference session will be awarded the B.F. McCullough Award.  In addition, student poster board authors are eligible to earn registration fee waivers for the International Conference (limit one fee waiver per poster). Grants for student conference travel may be available from participating chapters of the American Concrete Pavement Association (www.pavement.com).

For additional information, submittal details, and example posters please go to:

ACPA Excellence in Concrete Pavement Award Nominations Open

The American Concrete Paving Association’s (ACPA) 19th Annual Awards for Excellence in Concrete Pavement are open for nominations.  The awards are designed to honor quality concrete pavements constructed in the United States and Canada each year. The awards program encourages high-quality workmanship in every concrete pavement project and serves as a forum for sharing information about highly successful projects.

The awards program recognizes contractors, engineers, and project owners who completed outstanding projects in 2007. Winning an Award for Excellence in Concrete Pavement provides the contractors, engineers, and owners with a level of prestige that can assist them in the development of future projects.

For more information or to nominate projects using the online form (deadline of July 18, 2008), please go to:

New Chemical Admixture for Slip-form Paving

BASF Construction Chemical Company has developed a new liquid chemical admixture called Navitas 33, a rheology-controlling admixture (RCA).  The RCA is designed for use in low-slump concrete mixtures, especially for slip-form paving operations to aid in finishing and providing more uniform edges.  The admixture acts as a lubricant and lowers the yield stress to increase workability and flow during vibration only, when energy is added to the concrete.  Unlike viscosity modifying admixtures (VMA), this chemical admixture does not impact the viscosity or slump of the mixture.

New NCHRP Report Released on Recycled Aggregates

The transportation infrastructure uses about 95 percent of all aggregates manufactured in the United States.  With the vast majority of these aggregates being new, virgin aggregates, more transportation agencies are looking into utilizing recycled materials for reduced costs and to lessen environmental impacts of pavement construction.  The National Cooperative Highway Research program (NCHRP) has just released a new document entitled “Performance-Related Tests of Recycled Aggregates for Use in Unbound Pavement Layers” by Dr. Athar Saeed of Applied Research Associate, Inc. for use by the pavement community.  This report can be downloaded as a .pdf document at:
