Dynatest

Dynatest was founded by a group of engineers and technicians who combined science, technology and business into the development and manufacturing of highly specialized equipment and a methodology for pavement engineering.  The first Dynatest product, the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD), has become a product acknowledged for its quality and reliability since it was first introduced more than 30 years ago.  In addition to FWDs, Dynatest now offers a wide range of equipment and services for pavement structural and functional evaluations and research, such as pavement friction testers, Road/Runway Surface Profilometers®, Digital Highway Data Vehicles (DHDV) for automated pavement condition surveys, Heavy Vehicle Simulators (HVS), pavement instrumentation sensors, and Pavement Management Systems.

Dynatest is committed to providing access to its technology on a worldwide basis, and as such, has strategically located offices and agencies around the globe. From modest beginnings, Dynatest has developed into a small yet multinational group, with a parent company that has wholly-owned subsidiaries in Denmark, USA and the United Kingdom, plus joint-venture companies and numerous strategic alliances, as well as an established global network of agents and distributors.  These entities subscribe to the Dynatest Methodology, thus providing a uniform, consistent worldwide product support network.

Industry Notes

TRB Committee AFH50 Holds Mid-year Meeting

The mid-year meeting of TRB Committee AFH50 (Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Construction) was held in Ames, Iowa, USA on June 5th and 6th.  After a brief presentation by Paul Wiegand on the friction test sites built on US 30 in 2005 and by Jim Cable on the ultra-thin test sections built on IA 21 in 1994, the group headed out to visit both project sites.  After 14 years, many of the ultra-thin test sections on IA 21 (with slab thicknesses varying from 2 inches to 8 inches and varying slab dimensions) are performing in outstanding fashion.  Dr. Cable followed up with a review of PCC Thin Overlay Experience in Iowa.  There was also an interesting presentation on tire noise and dowel bar retrofit/faulting in California by Erwin Kohler.

The following sessions were proposed for the 2009 Annual TRB Meeting:  Design-Build Concrete Pavement Projects:  Size Doesn’t Matter; Specialty Applications for Concrete Pavements (co-sponsored with TRB Committee AFN40); Concrete Paving Mixture Optimization (co-sponsored with TRB Committee AFN40); and Construction Techniques to Minimize Curling and Warping.  The AFH50 committee is also proposing a webinar on Construction of PCCP General Aviation Airports Around the Nation.  The committee will be co-sponsoring a full-day workshop emphasizing research, construction applications, sustainability, and their interaction with the CP Road Map.

The AFH50 committee also notes that two open houses will be held on recent concrete pavement construction projects: in Norfolk, Virginia, USA on July 30 for a CRCP project on I-64 (hosted by the Virginia DOT), and near Abilene, Kansas, USA in September for a 2-lift construction project on I-70  (hosted by the Kansas DOT).

TRB Papers Now Being Accepted

The August 1, 2008 paper submission deadline is quickly approaching for the 88th Annual Transportation Research Board (TRB) Meeting in Washington, D.C., USA (submission for non-PDF format documents is even earlier).  The 88th Annual TRB Meeting is scheduled for January 11-15, 2009, and with nearly 600 sessions and meetings scheduled and more than 10,500 delegates from more than 75 countries expected there, will be something for everyone. International visitors are encouraged to check current US visa requirements and start planning now.

The spotlight theme for 2009 is Transportation, Energy, and Climate Change.  Although all transportation- or pavement-related papers are welcome many workshops and sessions will focus on the spotlight theme. The specific concrete pavement-related calls for papers included:

·     Advances in Recycled and Alternate Concrete Materials

·     Coefficient of Thermal Expansion for Concrete

·     Emerging Concrete Technologies Maintenance and Preservation of Transportation Structures

·     Nanotechnology-based Concrete Materials

·     New Developments in Air Entrainment Technology of Concrete

·     Widening the Vision of Acceptable Materials for Sustainable Concrete

For more information, visit http://trb.org/.

CP Tech Center Investigates Surface Texture

The National Concrete Pavement Technology Center (CP Tech Center) is currently working with the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and seven State DOTs on Part 3 of a three-part program to examine tire-pavement noise on concrete pavement.  The initial activity involved the development of a Strategic Plan.  For the second part of the project, the CP Tech Center, in conjunction with ACPA and FHWA, initiated data collection on new construction, nearly new construction, and older sections of interest.  To date, over 1200 unique test sections have been evaluated by The Transtec Group.  Of critical importance is a test section that has been constructed on US Highway 30, just east of LeGrand, Iowa.  This was constructed in August of 2005 and was financed by the Iowa Highway Research Board and the Iowa DOT.

The section is over two miles long and includes 18 different textures.  Some have burlap or turf pretexture and others don’t.  The surface texture includes longitudinal and transverse tining at different spacing and depths, as well as drag textures from turf and burlap.  One diamond grinding section is also included.  Testing was initiated immediately after construction (pre-broom; pre-traffic), just prior to traffic (post-broom), six months after opening, 1.5 years after opening, and 2.5 years after opening.

Tests include On Board Sound Intensity (OBSI) at the tire-pavement interface, texture measurements with the Robo-Tex, wayside noise, in-vehicle noise, and friction measurements with the skid trailer and dynamic friction meter.  Results can be found on the CP Tech Center website:  www.cptechcenter.org.

Other work activities for the project include development of a better practices manual for constructing and texturing concrete pavements.  That manual should be available in late summer.

Honorary Member Profile:
Bill Dearasaugh, Jr.

Dearasaugh Photo - Cropped

Bill Dearasaugh, Jr. was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, and went to the "famous" Central High School, which was integrated a few years after his graduation. He went to Vanderbilt University under a full NROTC scholarship and served three years in the Navy before starting his engineering profession. During the Interstate highway boom he was hired by Howard Needles Tammen and Burgendoff (HNTB) in Kansas City without even an interview and remained there for 18 years.  Eventually he was responsible for designing highways all over the nation, and he earned Master’s degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Kansas and Engineering Management from Vanderbilt University.  During this time, he also had a position in Iran (just prior to the revolution) where he was responsible for procurement of equipment to construct a major, interstate-type highway from Tehran to the Persian Gulf.

Then came his real opportunity to serve the cement and concrete industry as a paving engineer with the Portland Cement Association, covering Missouri and Kansas. During this time, he was responsible for technical, educational, and promotional activities with regard to concrete, especially for paving highways, airports, streets, and parking lots.  While he was in this position, the state of Kansas placed more concrete pavement than any other state.

After 8 years with the PCA, he became a Senior Staff Officer in the NCHRP program, administering approximately 20 pavement-related research projects a year.  He also participated in the Scanning Tour of European Concrete Highways in 1992.   While at TRB, he was the Engineer of Design in the Technical Activities Division, with staff responsibility for 24 Standing Committees in the General Design, Pavement Management, and Structures Sections.

Bill is now enjoying retirement by playing on two softball teams, golfing often and playing racquetball at least once a week.  He has successfully battled and recovered from pancreatic cancer.  He has led a full life, much of which has been dedicated to concrete pavements.

ISCP is proud to have Bill Dearasaugh, Jr. as an Honorary Member!
