Message from the President
More than ever before, good understanding of concrete
pavement technology is needed to address the demanding longevity and
sustainability requirements associated with the quality of life we all seek,
and we can visualize being immeasurably benefited by the more effective application
of concrete pavement technolgoy. ISCP
is genuinely committed to technology transfer on a worldwide basis, but there
is a need to step up our efforts to develop the information infrastructure of
the Society. We have gotten a start on
a variety of outreach efforts, but need to double these efforts in order to
accelerate the progress that has taken place to date. The task is enormous but nonetheless worthwhile; improving
the transfer of technology through conferences (either national, regional, or
international conferences), workshops, seminars, workshops, document caches,
etc., will continue for many years to come.
Key members of the Board are initiating efforts to facilitate
technology transfer in a variety of forms.
George Vorobieff and José Balbo have been successful in coordinating co-sponsorship
of a conference in Dan Zollinger International Conference on
Concrete Pavements – ISCP is pleased to announce that the Society is
co-sponsoring the International Conference on Concrete Pavements – Papers and conference presentations are being solicited for
a wide range of topics dealing with concrete pavement innovations, including
(but not limited to): concrete pavement analysis, design, and construction;
concrete materials and pavement performance; joint performance; different
types of concrete pavements and overlays; post-construction evaluation;
long-term performance; ecological issues; economics; and more. Papers and presentations dealing with emerging topics are

Computer Modeling Hosted by ACBM/NIST The
Center for Advanced Cement-Based Materials (ACBM), the National Institute of
Standards and Technology (NIST), and The
focus of the workshop is on cement-based materials, showing how
microstructure development during hydration and subsequent properties can be
computed with three- dimensional models. An emphasis of the workshop is how
experimental materials science data can combine synergistically with
computational materials science results to help solve the complex problems of
concrete. The
3-day workshop is tutorial in nature, and is intended to be useful both to
those who do experimental work and would like to learn how computer models
can contribute to their research, as well as to those who themselves do
computer modeling. The workshop is made up of lectures from NIST personnel,
invited lectures from distinguished researchers in academia and government,
and 15-minute talks from the workshop attendees themselves highlighting their
areas of technical interest. An
electronic version of the announcement and schedule can be found online
entitled “Modeling and Measuring the Structure and Properties of Cement-Based
Materials”. Registration is free for
the workshop, however those interested in attending must register for the

Publication on Stormwater Management with Pervious Concrete Pavement The
American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) announces the availability of
“Stormwater Management with Pervious Concrete Pavement” (IS334-P). This publication is one of the
Association’s most popular publications, which covers the very timely topic
of pervious pavements. The
popular publication covers topics such as application, construction and
design considerations, limitations, maintenance and effectiveness. Detailed sample cross sections for several
scenarios are also included. All
figures have been updated to now include both English and metric units. Also, the “References” and “Additional
Resources” sections have been greatly expanded and updated to better reflect
the relatively recent adoption of pervious concrete pavement by an ever
expanding number of specifying agencies.
Just a few examples include: • American Concrete Institute (ACI)
guidance documents and specifications, • • Research by the National Ready Mixed
Concrete Association, and • State Department of Transportation
research reports. The
publication also cites ACPA’s “PerviousPave,” a new software program
currently in development by ACPA. This
program will be the first formal design procedure/software created
exclusively for the purpose of designing pervious concrete pavements. The price of IS334-P is $4.50 for members,
$18 for non-members. The
publication is available by contacting ACPA’s Gloria Hallman at 847-966-2272
