What's New at ISCP

Message from the President

Zollinger photoMany of us may have felt the unfortunate effects of the recent downturn in the economy both personally or professionally.  I hope that you are finding ways to cope with the circumstances and hope the situation will soon begin to improve for us all.

More than ever before, good understanding of concrete pavement technology is needed to address the demanding longevity and sustainability requirements associated with the quality of life we all seek, and we can visualize being immeasurably benefited by the more effective application of concrete pavement technolgoy.   ISCP is genuinely committed to technology transfer on a worldwide basis, but there is a need to step up our efforts to develop the information infrastructure of the Society.  We have gotten a start on a variety of outreach efforts, but need to double these efforts in order to accelerate the progress that has taken place to date.

The task is enormous but nonetheless worthwhile; improving the transfer of technology through conferences (either national, regional, or international conferences), workshops, seminars, workshops, document caches, etc., will continue for many years to come.  Key members of the Board are initiating efforts to facilitate technology transfer in a variety of forms.  George Vorobieff and José Balbo have been successful in coordinating co-sponsorship of a conference in China that is scheduled for December of this year.  Juan Pablo Covarrubias has developed a list of potential new corporate sponsors based on his visit to the World of Concrete this past February, and he is working to expand and better define membership benefits. Both Mike Darter and Bryan Perrie have initiated efforts to establish linkages between library resources available to the PCA, EUPAVE, and the Concrete Institute in South Africa.  There are many ways ISCP members can pitch in and help out with any of these efforts.  Please don’t hesitate to contact us or anyone of these individuals to get involved.  We want your involvement and look forward to your participation to help ISCP to meet its mission and become an even greater organization.

ACPA Offers Publication on Stormwater Management with Pervious Concrete Pavement

The American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) announces the availability of “Stormwater Management with Pervious Concrete Pavement” (IS334-P).   This publication is one of the Association’s most popular publications, which covers the very timely topic of pervious pavements.

The popular publication covers topics such as application, construction and design considerations, limitations, maintenance and effectiveness.  Detailed sample cross sections for several scenarios are also included.

All figures have been updated to now include both English and metric units.   Also, the “References” and “Additional Resources” sections have been greatly expanded and updated to better reflect the relatively recent adoption of pervious concrete pavement by an ever expanding number of specifying agencies.   Just a few examples include:

American Concrete Institute (ACI) guidance documents and specifications,

U.S.  Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports,

Research by the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, and

State Department of Transportation research reports.

The publication also cites ACPA’s “PerviousPave,” a new software program currently in development by ACPA.  This program will be the first formal design procedure/software created exclusively for the purpose of designing pervious concrete pavements.  The price of IS334-P is $4.50 for members, $18 for non-members.

The publication is available by contacting ACPA’s Gloria Hallman at 847-966-2272 (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central); by fax at 847-966-9970 (24/7); or by email to ghallman@acpa.org (any time).   For overnight or other priority shipping, please call in advance of placing the order to obtain a precise cost quotation.
