Texas City & FAA Upgrading 70-Year-Old Concrete Landing Strips

The online news “Tyler Morning Telegraph” reported on the concrete pavement reconstruction of a 70-year-old concrete runway in Tyler, Texas, USA. Concrete flowed this week as crews worked on the first part of a project to reconfigure a runway at Tyler Pounds Regional Airport. Airport Manager Davis Dickson said portions of the runway were installed just after World War II (1945). The upgrades/reconstruction would be able to accommodate larger aircraft with new destinations.

The city is working with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to upgrade runway 4-22—the longest of three runways at Tyler Pounds. Segments of the runway are being reconstructed with 14-inch thick concrete. The strip is 2,377 meters (7,800 linear feet) long and 45.7 meters (150-feet) wide. Tyler Pounds is proposing to extend the runway to 2,545 meters (8,350 feet). The work will also upgrade instrumentation to accommodate landings by larger planes. Crews are working on the first of five sections of work. As the concrete sets, officials are prepping in anticipation of more grant money to complete the second leg of the project.

“To me, (the runway extension) represents a multigenerational project,” Davis said. “It could last 50 to 70 years. Part of what is being reconstructed was built after WWII (1945) which spans well over a generation—this [project could render] the very same [life span].” Davis said the upgraded runway also has potential to bring more commerce to the county.
