The European Concrete Paving Association (EUPAVE) released a joint publication with the European Asphalt Pavement Association (EAPA) and the Forum of European National Highway Research Laboratories (FEHRL ) entitled āRoad pavement industries highlight huge CO2Ā savings offered by maintaining and upgrading roadsā.
The publication highlights that road pavements have to make a key contribution to reduceĀ CO2Ā emissions from road transport. The three associations emphasise that smooth, well-maintained road surfaces lead to lower rolling resistance, thus lowering emissions from vehicles. Upgrading and maintaining roads should be part of any strategy to reduce road transport emissions. This calls for increased investment in roads,Ā greater alignment of policies on CO2, and policies for upgrading of roads.
The publication shows:
ā¢ By 2030, an upgrade of 1/3Ā of the entire road network of Europe could lead to yearly savings of 14 million tons of CO2.
ā¢ If 2/3Ā of the network were upgraded, this could be 28 million tons of CO2Ā saved yearly. This is the equivalent of replacing 6 million cars with zero-emission cars!
