EUPAVE Leaflet: Soil Stabilization & In-Situ Pavement Recycling: 2 Sustainable Road Construction Techniques

The European Concrete Pavement Association (EUPAVE) has released a new brochure titled “Soil stabilization and in-situ pavement recycling, two of the most sustainable road construction techniques”. Raw materials are no longer simply consumed, but recycled in place, reducing waste to a minimum and preventing the extraction of natural resources. Less waste, less materials, and less transportation mean environmental and economic benefits. Applications include all types of roads, port and airport pavements, and railway tracks.

This publication:
• Highlights how recycling wornout asphalt pavement leads to environmental and economic benefits
• Shows the benefits of soil stabilization with cement or hydraulic binders as an environmentally-friendly and cost effective method of converting poor quality soil into structural layers with high bearing capacity

In-situ pavement recycling is: Old pavement, consisting of one or more asphalt layers upon a granular base, is considered the quarry of natural resources which are to be treated on site.
(1) A preliminary study determines the type and distribution of the different materials
(2) The existing pavement is milled off over the full depth and cement or a hydraulic road binder is added
(3) Extra aggregates and/or water are added if necessary
(4) Materials are mixed to become a new homogeneous and quality material
(5) Leveling and compaction of the new layer to a highly performing road base
(6) Ready to be covered with a new surface
