Because an engineering background is necessary to understand the differences between concrete and asphalt pavements in terms of moduli, or by layered elastic versus plate theory, a simpler method of explaining the differences is useful. Almost everyone in the world is familiar with LEGOs and can understand the physical properties of foods such as cake icing, granola cereal, marshmallows, and crackers. Robert Rodden, P.E., ISCP Executive Director, explains the differences between concrete and asphalt pavements using these terms.
