ACPA Workshop to be Held in October: “All About Joint Design & Construction”

ACPAWorkshpArtcl1The American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) will host a two-day national workshop on Concrete Pavement Joint Design and Construction, on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 27 and 28, 2015 at the ACPA Headquarters in Rosemont, Illinois, USA. The workshop is oriented to design consultants, agencies, contractor personnel, and others with an interest in concrete pavement joint design and construction. This comprehensive training will include lecture-discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises.

DAY 1:
10 am – 5 pm CDT
Practical Aspects of Joint Design Topics:
Why we joint pavements
Joint spacing considerations
Types of joints (including specialty joints)
Joint mechanics
Corrosion protection for dowels and tie bars
Joint layout and design considerations—including roundabouts and diverging diamond interchanges

A hands-on exercise will provide participants with an opportunity to develop and discuss workable joint layouts for typical and complex paving situations.

DAY 2:
8 am – 3 pm CDT
Joint Construction and Quality Topics:
Recommended practices for dowel and tie bar placement/insertion
Techniques and timing for sawing/forming joints
Construction of longitudinal and transverse joint systems
The need for, and design of, sealed and filled joints

The workshop will also include:
Demonstration of dowel alignment measurement equipment
Discussion of field alignment measurement examples
Hands-on exercise in evaluating dowel alignment data
Session on what can go wrong in joint design and construction … and how to fix it. This session is anticipated to be a great discussion on real-world challenges and solutions!
