Costa Rica: 5th APT Conference to be Held September 2016

APTOrganizers“The roles of APT in pavement sustainability: Engineering, environmental, and economics”

CostaRica2The National Laboratory of Materials and Structural Models (LANAMME) of the Universidad de Costa Rica (University of Costa Rica) is pleased to announce the 5th International Conference on Accelerated Pavement Testing (APT 2016 Costa Rica). The 5th conference will be held September 19-21, 2016 at the Wyndham Herradura San Jose Hotel and Convention Center, San Jose, Costa Rica. Organized by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) through the AFD40, the Standing Committee on Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing, this is the first APT Conference to be held in Latin America. Costa Rica is honored to host the 5th APT Conference, and invites federal government, autonomous institutions, municipalities, private industry, banking, and academia professionals who are in the industries of roads, ports and airports. International attendees will share their research and establish links with other colleagues at this important and unique scientific forum.

Pertaining to accelerated concrete pavements, Tuesday afternoon’s conference program contains:
• Design of Bonded Concrete Overlays for Accelerated Pavement Testing Using Heavy Vehicle Simulator (HVS)
• Performance of Thin RCC Pavements Under Accelerated Loading
• The Design, Construction and First-Phase Heavy Vehicle Simulator Testing Results on Full-Scale Ultra-Thin Reinforced Concrete Sections at Rayton, South Aftrica
• The Design, Construction and Heavy Vehicle Simulator Testing Results on Roller Compacted Concrete Test Sections at the CSIR Innovation Site and on a Full-Scale Test Road at Rayton

ACCELERATED PAVEMENT TESTING:
FOR CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES
, the results of APT are an important source of professional development which, when applied to the processes of design and construction of pavements, may represent substantial improvements in the development of new projects. These provide predictive information about the behavior of structures and insight into the performance of materials, compare design alternatives, and identify structural deficiencies in construction practices. FOR FEDERAL AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS, decision making on design specifications, construction management, road maintenance, and the generation of applied standards may be targeted based on the results of APT—which are developed in order to predict in a short-time effects that can be obtained in the different structures being tested. By considering additional parameters (climate, load, etc.), it is possible to define bidding posters adjusted to the specific requirements of the area in which the construction project will be developed, ensuring better performance and durability of the structure.
FOR RESEARCHERS AND ACADEMICS, APTs carried out in various parts of the world become valuable experiences to generate synergy in similar investigations in research centers. They produce professional development for teachers—who help develop new generations of engineers with high professional levels—to respond to innovative technological demands of today’s world.

The 5th Conference Committee is concerned with:
• The full-scale testing of traditional and innovative pavement systems that reflect various construction conditions and maintenance practices.
• Testing that can be performed using conventional or accelerated methods utilizing mobile or fixed equipment under in-situ controlled conditions.
• The test results to assess long-term pavement-system performance under full axle loads for improved modeling, design, construction, and management of pavement systems, thereby optimizing their life-cycle costs.
