The Guatemalan Institute of Cement and Concrete (ICCG) hosted the “8° Congreso Iberoamericano de Pavements de Concreto” (8th Iberoamerican Congress on Concrete Pavements) July 19-22 in the beautiful tourist city of Antigua, Guatemala. Professionals from Latin America attended this impeccably organized conference.

Presentations included:

  • The use of cement and concrete in low volume roads
  • The ultra-thin short slab with fibers from Chile
  • The “Unicapa” system from El Salvador
  • Workshop on Cost Analysis— a very well attended parallel session
  • The new government push for concrete pavements in Paraguay
  • Current practices in Colombia
  • Current practices in Guatemala

A most impressive EVENT was the observation of the short-slabs technology at a viewing of the road connecting Guatemala City (airport) to Antigua (conference venue)—which was paved in 2011 with short slabs using the TCPavements technology (a widespread short-slab technology in Guatemala). Everyone who attended the event had the chance to see the great condition of this road.

The event ended with a TECHNICAL VISIT to the private [VAS] highway built with concrete short slabs which opened to traffic last year.  VAS is a new [toll] road, alternating with existing public roads, which seeks to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of those who reside, work or move in the southern part of the Department of Guatemala.
