NC² MAP Brief Summer 2021

The NC² E-News, originally the quarterly newsletter of the former “CP Road MAP program”, overviews new developments in concrete pavement research and technology from around the United States. NC² MAP Brief is best practices and promising technologies that can be used now to enhance concrete paving. The new Summer 2021 NC² Moving Advancements into Practice (MAP) Brief titled “Improving the Foundation Layers for Concrete Pavements: Lessons Learned and a New Framework for Mechanistic Assessment”, that identifies improved concrete pavement foundation layers and a new framework for mechanistic assessment as vital to achieving this goal is now available and can be found in the NC² Resource Library, as well.

40-Year Pavements Demand Improved Foundations

State Highway Agencies (SHAs) are facing a tremendous technical and financial challenge in how to not only improve the condition of their transportation infrastructure, but modernize it for future needs with the constrained funding available. The consistent gap between available infrastructure funding and what is required for maintaining roadway networks has many agencies discussing how 20- to 40-year pavement systems can be achieved, and as a result, many agencies have had to delay needed improvements on portions of their network as funding is channeled to address the most pressing infrastructure needs.
Building Information Modeling (BIM): Data Integration for Reduced Lifecycle Cost

BIM is not merely 3D modeling. BIM is a collaborative work method for structuring, managing, and using data and information about transportation assets throughout their lifecycle. Users report that BIM benefits include optimized design, greater ability to predict costs, improved project communications, increased worker safety, fewer errors, and improved schedule performance.

series of flyers, slide presentations, tech briefs, presentations, case studies, and videos developed by the CP Tech Center for Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) aims to educate stakeholders as an increasing number of state DOTs experience the potential of BIM. BIM’ss treatment of data as an asset and its breaking down business silos so data are accessible throughout a project and asset lifecycle is a game changer.
