EUPAVE: New Fact Sheet on Resilience to Climate & Events; Proceedings Now Available: MATEXPO 2021 Workshop

NEW FACT SHEET

European Concrete Pavement Association (EUPAVE) has published its new and 4th FACT SHEET titled “Concrete roads show better resilience to climate change and extreme meteorological events“, which explains the aspects of climate resilience

Following the release of the EUPAVE INFOGRAPHIC, “Concrete Pavements make roads more sustainable”, EUPAVE’s working group on Environmental Strategy has produced fact sheets focusing on its different items.

1st — Looks deeper into the high albedo effect
2nd — Focuses on fuel consumption
3rd — Touts Concrete Roads are 100% recyclable

4th FACT SHEET shows how concrete roads are more resilient to climate change and extreme meteorological events. Titled “Concrete roads show better resilience to climate change and extreme meteorological events“, this fact sheet explains that one of the aspects of climate resilience is the capacity of a system to absorb stresses and maintain function in the fact of external stresses imposed unpon it by climate change. For roads and infrastructure, climate resilience efforts aim at addressing the vulnerability with regard to the environmental consequences of climate change.

The 2 MAIN CONSEQUENCES OF CLIMATE CHANGE that will affect roads are the increase of temperature and precipitation. “Concrete pavements, in comparison with asphalt, withstand better the effects of high ambient temperatures, bush fires, flooding and extreme traffic loadings.” An appropriate adaptation strategy and a preventive long-term approach are necessary, providing robust, ‘future-proof’ solutions.

TOPICS covered are:
WHAT IS RESILIENCE
THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON ROADS AND PAVEMENTS
PRECIPITATION – FLOODING
EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS – BUSHFIRES
MITIGATION EFFECTS
WHAT POLICY IS NEEDED?

MATEXPO 2021 PROCEEDINGS NOW AVAILABLE:

On September 9, 2021, the Federation of the Belgian Cement Industry (FEBELCEM) and EUPAVE organized a joint workshop on “Offset concrete paving” at MATEXPO 2021, Kortrijk, Belgium. MATEXPO is a biennial international trade fair for building equipment at Kortrijk Xpo. As the third largest trade fair of its type in Europe, it has an established reputation and receives more than 40,000 visitors.

Mr. Luc Rens, Managing Director-EUPAVE, opened the workshop with a short introduction.
Mr. Jeroen de Vrieze, Advisor Promotion, Market and Statistics-Betonhuis, moderated the event.

The first presentation was given by Arnaud de Cnijf, Support Specialist-TOPCON Positioning, Belgium. Mr. de Cnijf started with presenting the company that designs and manufactures positioning products and solutions for the global surveying, construction, agriculture, amongst others. He gave a clear overview of different types of machine guidance systems.
PRESENTATION: 3D machine control: from theory to practice
The second presentation was given 3 representatives of 3 manufacturers of slipform paving machines—POWER CURBERS, GOMACO and WIRTGEN—introduced the offset paving applications:
—Mr. Guy Tops, International Sales Manager-Power Curbers, gave a presentation of Power Curbers starting with the history of the company. Since 1953, when Power Curbers made its first curb machine, the organisation developed its expertise worldwide. They will soon celebrate their 70th birthday!
PRESENTATION: Power Curbers
—Mr. Patrick Zanen, Global Director of Business Development-Gomaco, showed the large spectrum of competences of Gomaco. Representatives of the Belgian contractor Superbeton explained why they chose the Gomaco 3000 and showed the benefits of the machine. PRESENTATION: Gomaco
—Mr. Matthias Fritz, Machine Control Product Manager-Wirtgen, presented Wirtgen’s machines and more specifically the Wirtgen Autopilot 2.0 and its components, advantages and benefits. PRESENTATION: Wirtgen

Q&A followed the presentations.

EUPAVE thanked the 50+ participants for their interest, the speakers for their great contribution, and the MATEXPO team for the opportunity of organizing this event and their great support.
