“STUDENT RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT” March 2024

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Each month, or every other month, a student will provide a 1-page illustrated abstract of the research they are currently conducting. This is a wonderful opportunity for the student, for our International Society for Concrete Pavements (ISCP) Members, and for the transferring and sharing technology/research through our concrete paving industry.

The ISCP “STUDENT RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT” for March 2024 is Subham Jain, a Ph.D student at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (Kanpur, India).

BIO:

Subham Jain is a final year Joint M.Tech-Ph.D. student at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India working with Dr. Animesh Das (Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India) and Dr. K. S. Venkatesh (Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India). He completed his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from National Institute of Technology Silchar, India in 2015. Subham’s research area is focused on pavement texture and aggregate shape characterization. As a part of his Ph.D. thesis work, he designed and developed devices for measuring pavement surface texture in the sub-millimetre scale. As a part of his M.Tech thesis, he proposed an aggregate angularity measurement approach by image analysis. He has applied tools and concepts from areas such as image processing, signal processing and mechatronics to solve pavement engineering problems.

TITLE:
Development of a laser scanner for measuring concrete surface texture

When two concrete surfaces come in contact (for example between concrete overlay over existing concrete surface), or the concrete surface and tyre comes in contact, the surface texture influences the outcome such as friction and noise generation. Texturing is carried out, such as, tining and grooving, to influence such outcomes. Earlier the surface texture was assessed by visual examination and through sand patch test, but automation of surface texture measurement is becoming more prominent.

Laser scanning is used extensively for automated concrete surface texture measurement. Laser scanners used in practice are costly, for instance, some 3D laser scanners cost more than USD 15000. Subham has designed and developed a 3D laser scanner that can be used in a laboratory setup as part of his doctoral dissertation, as shown in the Figure 1 below. The details of the development can be found in Jain et al. (2022). Off-the-shelf components are used to assemble this laser scanner. Its cost is less than USD 500. The developed laser scanner works in sub-millimetre resolution, thus, can measure the surface microtexture and macrotexture.  The laser scanner is designed in a way that the user can choose between a range of measurement resolution, measurement area and data collection speed (Jain et al. 2022). It is envisioned that this improved design and lowered equipment cost of the laser scanner will be beneficial to pavement engineers.
