
The International Society for Concrete Pavements (ISCP) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dale Harrington, an honorary member since 2020. Dale was a titan in the transportation engineering industry, with a career spanning over 50 years. His professional life was marked by exemplary service and a tireless dedication to advancing concrete pavement technology. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
Dale’s contributions to the field are immense and long-lasting. He was instrumental in establishing the Portland Cement Concrete Center at Iowa State University, which evolved into the nationally recognized National Concrete Pavement Technology Center. Simultaneously, he founded and directed the Statewide Urban Design and Specifications (SUDAS) group, championing a program that is now a model for states across the country. His work, including co-authoring the “Guide to Concrete Overlays,” has shaped the industry and provided countless practitioners with the knowledge to improve concrete pavement technology.
Beyond his impressive professional accomplishments, Dale was a dedicated mentor and a true friend to so many. He had a unique ability to collaborate across the engineering and contracting industries, bringing people together to move the field forward. His influence and the care he showed for his colleagues are what truly set him apart. The stories we share about his impact will continue to carry on his legacy and inspire future generations.
