Bryan Perrie

Honorary Member Since 2020

Bryan Perrie, PE CEO-Cement & Concrete SA (CCSA), and long-time Managing Director-The Concrete Institute (TCI), Former Vice-President (2016-2018)-ISCP, and Long-time Former Director-ISCP (2012-2016) has been recognized for several decades as a global authority on concrete pavements and is “a veteran who has devoted his whole working life to advancing the cement and concrete industry, not only in southern Africa but across the world.” Bryan began his involvement with International Society for Concrete Pavements (ISCP)’s 7th ICCP in Orlando in 2001 and has attended all subsequent conferences for the past 20 years! Perrie said that he encouraged a more international involvement, persuaded ISCP to have a ‘South Africa Safari Strategy Meeting’ followed by a 2-day conference in Johannesburg, in 2007, and persuaded a number of local colleagues to attend various ISCP conferences. Since then, ISCP has broadened its reach to include involvement in conferences in China, Australia, Europe and South America.

Dr Peter Taylor, Director-National Concrete Pavement Technology Center (CP Tech Center)-Iowa State University, said few people had done as much for the cement and concrete industry than Perrie, and “he understands cement and concrete, how to make it work in practice, and is skilled in so many aspects of the business world: manager, technical expert, mentor, innovator, negotiator, and hands-on colleague. Bryan has also worked hard to make ISCP more of an international organization.”

Bryan holds a BSc (Eng) and MSc in Civil Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand-South Africa; is a registered professional engineer (PE); Fellow-South African Academy of Engineering; Member-Institute of Concrete Technology-UK; and now, an Honorary MemberInternational Society of Concrete Pavements.

Bryan started his career in 1984 at the Portland Cement Institute (later The Concrete Institute—now CCSA); then former Cement and Concrete Institute (C&CI) for 29 years, was Managing Director-C&CI the last 5 years (2016-2021). Following the demise of the C&CI in April 2013, he was instrumental in creating The Concrete Institute (TCI), where he was the Managing Director-TCI until the formation of CCSA, where he was appointed the CEO! He is a Fellow-SA Academy of Engineering, and a member of the SA Institution of Civil Engineering, the UK Concrete Society, UK Institute of Concrete Technology, and American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA).

Cement & Concrete SA (CCSA) was officially launched in March 2021 following an extensive and thorough process to consolidate The Concrete Institute (TCI), Concrete Society of Southern Africa (CCSA), and the Association of Cementitious Materials Producers (ACMP). The new, consolidated body will create long-term shared value and industry growth in South Africa through collaboration, skills development, innovation, and high standards in sustainable cement and concrete materials and products. CCSA will grow industry expertise and build capacity by developing and offering courses, seminars and training materials.

He has authored several books on concrete floors, concrete roads, and sections of several editions of Fulton’s Concrete Technology; has co-authored—with the late Louis Marais—of the definitive technical handbook, “Concrete Industrial Floors on the Ground”; and developed—with Dr Pieter Strauss and Dr Martin Slavik—the “mechanistically and risk-based cncPave design method for continuously reinforced concrete pavements”, which is the standard for concrete pavement design in South Africa—afterPerrie presented at the 2007 ISCP Orlando conference. He has also written many papers for publication and presentation at local and overseas seminars, conferences and symposia. Additionally, he was a Board Member of the Concrete Society, President-Southern Africa Road Federation (SARF), and Vice President-ISCP (2012-2016). Perrie currently chairs the South African Bureau of Standards’ Sub-Committee on Cement, Concrete and Concrete Products.

As President-SARF, Bryan taught courses, accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa, “dedicated to the promotion of the road industry in South Africa by dissemination of information, the promotion of sound policies, and by education and training.” SARF trains more than 1,500 people annually, and South Africa’s road network needs to continue to be properly managed, preserved, upgraded, expanded, funded, and through ongoing capacity development and training of engineers, technologists and technicians who work in the road sector is essential.
