Craig Whitaker earned a Chemistry Degree from Sydney TAFE in Sydney, NSW, Australia. Mr. Whitaker is a highly regarded expert in development of innovative concrete mix designs, has worked closely with Projects and Government Roads and Traffic Authority to develop and trial innovative concrete solutions—maturity testing for early age strengths in precast, porous concrete pavement for highways, new wax curing compound, two-layer concrete paving, mixer uniformity testing using nano particles, developed concrete spray mix suitable for a tunnel’s single pass operation, identified test to establish saw cut window for concrete pavements, cold-weather concrete, super workable concrete for precast, and alternative repair method for concrete replacement. He was also the CPB Precast Operations ManagerPrecast Facility from 2009-2010. His technical skills include: Approved RMS Grey Card Trainer for bridges and paving courses, highway construction, highways and drainage porous concrete, tunnel and dam construction, precast concrete manufacture, heavy duty pavements, building construction, RCC, stabilized materials, concrete mix designs, recycled materials in concrete, high volume earthworks projects and multi-span bridges, value engineering, constructibility reviews, mobile concrete batch plants, mobile crushing and screening operations, and establishment of precast manufacturing facility.

December 2007-February 2014: Mr. Whitaker was a Concrete and Material Specialist—Technical Consultant to Leighton Contractors (Now CPB and created EIC Activities as the Engineering Division for the CIMIC Group). Principal Precast and Concrete EIC Activities: Mr. Whitaker designed all varieties of concrete mixes for Leighton’s NSW to self-perform supply, approved all external suppliers’ concrete to Leighton, performed constructibility reviews, tenders reviews and negations for concrete and aggregates, trained staff and workforce, resolved correct concrete placement, developed innovations around concrete placement and energy absorption, and assisted in establishment of Leighton Contractor Precast Facility to self-perform precast bridge elements. 

For 30 years (1977 to 2007), he was Laboratory Manager as well has held other major roles at Hanson (formerly Pioneer Concrete), which entailed: Laboratory ManagerNSW Country Technical Manager—46 concrete plants and 6 major quarries. He developed branded concrete mixes such as Sureset and Easicrete, supported/managed many of Australia’s largest road projects as well as mixes for underground mines, trained staff and site personnel, resolved technical matters and a variety of issues relating to concrete supply, and designed suitable shotcrete mixes for underground and tunnel work; NSW Mobile Plant Manager simultaneously with NSW Technical Manager and Project Manager for 10 mobile concrete batch plants, two pugmills and other mobile equipment; NSW Technical Sales and Marketing Manager—NSW … created markets for branded concrete mixes in Sydney Metropolitan area; Project Manager Major Infrastructure Projects—NSW … concrete and aggregates, led Hanson’s push to be market leader in providing concrete products and mixes to the Australian Construction Industry, established Hanson as a technical partner with Construction Companies and government specifiers, strategic constructability advice to Tier Construction Companies on aggregates supply; Technical Manager Hanson Malaysia simultaneously as Project Manager and Technical Manager—concrete plants, major quarries, and precast operations Pioneer/Hanson in Malaysia and Singapore. As Technical Manager for projects, his duties included: Tender negotiations, mix designs for segmental precast bridge sections, establishment of on-site plant and laboratory, cost control, capital purchases, material selection and negotiations with suppliers, industrial relations, safety, constructibility issues, dispute resolutions, and NATA signatory for site laboratory: Projects Included:

  • North Parkes and Cadia Mine—Developed mix designs for concrete suitable for roads and walls in underground mine
  • Queensland M1 Motorway—one section of the motorway upgrade from single lane to multiple lane highway and service road between Brisbane and Gold Coast Harbour Project
