The Concrete Pavement Association of Minnesota (CPAM) hosted a concrete overlay construction workshop on October 28, 2015  at the Owatonna Country Club in Owatonna, Minnesota, USA. More than 40 attendees were present, including: county engineers and staff from Districts 6, 7, 8 and Metro; concrete paving contractors; and concrete paving consultants. Presentations were given by Gary Fick, V.P.-Trinity Construction Management Services, Inc. and Tom Cackler, National Concrete Pavement Technology Center (NCPTC). A summary of concrete pavement pricing from public abstracts was provided by Bob McPartlin,PE, Field Promoter-CPAM. Where the focus of many overlay workshops and seminars focus on the design of concrete overlays, various county engineers specifically requested a workshop on the construction of concrete overlays. CPAM responded!
Several project examples were provided by NCPTC to discuss the design and construction considerations for concrete overlays. Attendees discussed their upcoming projects and were able to acquire answers specific to their projects’ concerns. At the end of the presentations, the audience had a chance to look at a specific upcoming county project and decided—as a group—the best future design and construction phasing, based on the surrounding site constraints and public concerns.
