2018 BC Concrete Pavements Workshop Held in Canada

The Cement Association of Canada, an ISCP affiliate, together with Concrete BC (Concrete British Columbia), held a series of “Sustainable Roadways Workshops”: 2018 BC Concrete Pavements Workshop was held in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada in mid October. In support of the Cement Association of Canada, Leif Wathne, Director-ISCP and Executive VP-ACPA, participated, along with many industry and agency officials. LCCA and project examples from across Western Canada also were focal points of the workshop.

The seminar highlighted opportunities for concrete  pavements in British Columbia, discussing the tools, materials and techniques available to build, maintain, and repair municipal roads. Also, an introduction to the benefits of concrete pavements from a life-cycle perspective, including project examples from across Western Canada.

Wathne noted that Omar Swei, Assistant Professor-University of British Columbia, presented on improving infrastructure design and maintenance. Wathne spoke about competition, asset management, and concrete overlays. In the concrete overlay presentation, Wathne cited several resources, including the CP Tech Center’s “Guide to Overlays”—just one of a large collection of manuals & guidelines, reports, tech briefs and other Concrete Overlay Resources the Center offers.

Wathne said, “An ongoing dialogue with the concrete and cement industry in BC can help agencies better understand what steps to take to start benefitting from inter-industry competition.”
