The 18th Annual Paul Zia Distinguished Lecture: “Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement—Design & Construction of the SR 99 Tunnel”, will be presented on Monday, September 23, 2019, on the North Carolina State University (NCSU) campus, at 3:00 p.m. at the Stewart Theatre in the Talley Student Union. This annual lecture honors Professor Emeritus Dr. Paul Zia, Former Professor and Department HeadNC State Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering, and a structural engineer who is eminent in research, professional society leadership and practice.

Presenters include:
Dr. Yang Jiang, P.E., Principal Engineer-HNTB
Dr. Mike Wongkaew, P.E., S.E., Associate Vice President and National Tunnel Practice Lead-HNTB
The presenters will discuss various topics related to the design and construction of the two-mile double-decker tunnel under downtown Seattle:

  • Design and construction of the 57.5-ft diameter tunnel
  • Owner considerations of the $3.3 billion project
