The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) “Every Day Counts (EDC-4) Program” created a Pavement Preservation “HOW” peer-exchange project dedicated to improving specifications and construction quality and ultimately, the use of pavement preservation strategies. The FHWA HOW Program was contracted through the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center (CP Tech Center), which enlisted the International Grooving and Grinding Association (IGGA) to help conduct the project.

The new series of “Pavement Preservation How” tech briefs initiative helps agency and industry personnel answer such questions as … “How are other states on a shoestring budget preserving THEIR pavements? Which preservation techniques do other states find most useful (or problematic)—and why?”

The series’ documentation of the state-of-the-practice in pavement preservation and the outline of best practice provided by FHWA‘s Pavement Preservation Checklist Series (developed by CP Tech Center), assist agency and industry decision-makers in maximizing their pavements’ lifespan.

The project:
• Conducted 10 regional FHWA Peer exchanges between September 2018 and May 2019
• Each involved 3 to 4 participating states
• Total: 342 total attendees from 37 states participated in the FHWA Peer exchanges
• Each peer exchanges prepared a Tech Brief—document the activities and to promote the lessons learned from each event. To see the FHWA Tech Briefs, please see below, or go to: https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/preservation/library.cfm
