MATEXPO: www.matexpo.com/en/visit-matexpo/how-to-reach

For the third time already, the Federation of the Belgian Cement Industry (FEBELCEM), and the European Concrete Paving Association (EUPAVE), are co-organising a workshop on the occasion of Matexpo.

The theme for this year is “Offset Concrete Paving” or the construction of concrete structures with a slipform paver whereby the mould is located outside the machine’s frame. This concerns mainly linear constructions such as kerbs, gutters and safety barriers, but footpaths and cycle paths can also be built in this way.

The three manufacturers of slipform pavers, who are also members of EUPAVE – Gomaco, Wirtgen and PowerCurbers – will explain the possibilities of their machines, including wireless control. In addition, the required concrete mix and the certification of concrete for linear constructions, as applicable in Flanders, will be discussed.

Low-carbon & Circular Concrete!
On Wednesday June 23, 2021 EUPAVE held a technical webinar entitled “Towards a low-carbon & circular concrete”. The discussion focused on new cement types, alternatives binders and aggregate substitution by recycled materials and by-products. The webinar was attended by around 90 participants from more than 25 countries.
Mr. Luc Rens, Managing-Director of EUPAVE, opened the event by welcoming the participants and presentingEUPAVE and its activities. He also stressed the importance of the chosen topics in the light of Europe’s Green Deal.
Mr. Edwin Vermeulen, Director of Cement&Beton Centrum, started by describing the issue of availability of raw materials. Afterwards, he presented several special cement types and alternative binders to achieve significant CO2 reduction.

Recycled Concrete Aggregate and Other Recycled Materials in Concrete:
The second presentation was given by Mr. Bram Dooms, Assistant Head of Laboratory, Laboratory “Concrete Technology”-Belgian Building Research Institute. Mr. Dooms focused on the use of recycled concrete aggregate and other recycled materials in concrete. His findings were based upon the Belgian research project Circular.Concrete.

EUPAVE joins the EP Long-Term Investment & Sustainable & Competitive Industry Intergroup

EUPAVE joined the Long-Term Investment and Sustainable & Competitive European Industry Intergroup as partner-organization. They look forward contributing to the discussions and activities!

“The Intergroup serves as a forum for discussion on the multifaceted dimensions of long-term and sustainable investments, and of a comprehensive EU industrial policy over the EU 2019-2024 term. It provides Members of the European Parliament with an efficient horizontal tool supporting their activities in their relevant committees.”

The Intergroup serves as a forum on Long-Term Investment and Sustainable & Competitive Industry for MEPs. The meetings would be open to their assistants, EU institutions’ staff, and stakeholders including from the private sector. Meetings would be open to public as well as private actors, focussing on financial and industrial matters from an operational and public-interest perspective, providing the ground for a horizontal approach that is key to shaping European policies on those critical debates.

The Intergroup should play a key role in two interconnected areas: on the one hand, the growing debate on sustainable finance, a greener MFF & EU budget, and the implementation of the Sustainable Europe Investment Plan in the context the Green Deal announced by the Commission; on the other, stimulate discussions on the conditions needed for European industry to thrive and improve its competitiveness/leadership in the new green and digital economy.

To make it happen, the Intergroup will focus on:SMEs and mid-caps funding

  • Economic infrastructures for sustainable transport, energy and communication
  • Social infrastructures
  • Social economy
  • Optimization of funding channels
  • EU research & innovation funding
  • Innovation-led transformation of European industry.
  • European industry’s long-term global leadership
  • Societal challenges as future drivers of prosperity
  • Unleash the potential of the European Single Market

Bureau and Members: The Bureau is composed of 3 Co-Presidents: Mr Dominique Riquet, Ms Maria da Graça Carvalho and Ms Simona Bonafé. The Bureau gives strategic input to the Intergroup and approves the initiatives conducted within this framework. Any initiative of the intergroup must be done with the unanimous agreement of the members of the Bureau.

For the Intergroup “What We Do”, please go to: https://investmentindustryintergroup.eu/en/what-we-do/
The members of the intergroup are members of the European Parliament who wish to contribute to the work of the Intergroup: https://www.eupave.eu/eupave-is-now-partner-of-the-european-parliament-industry-and-long-term-investment-intergroup/

3 New FACTSHEETS:

100% recycling: https://www.eupave.eu/resources/fact-sheet-100-recycling/
“Concrete is made with local raw materials and is 100% recyclable. Concrete having reached the end of its life can be crushed to provide aggregates – sand and stones – for use in new concrete or in other cement-bound or unbound applications such as road bases. In all cases natural resources are saved. Concrete mixes for road construction can accommodate low carbon cement types using secondary materials recycled from other industries, resulting in equal performances:
• fly ash
• slag

How “high albedo” contributes to reduction of carbon emissions from road transport: https://www.eupave.eu/eupave-releases-fact-sheet-on-high-albedo/
“Albedo is the ability of a surfact to reflect light rays. In case of a light-coloured concrete surface, more energy is reflected in the atmosphere compared to a black surface, which absorbs the heat. The high albedo of concrete pavements offers several benefits.”

The high albedo of concrete pavements offers several benefits:

  1. Slowing down the global heating
  2. Reducing the Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE)
  3. Saving cost and energy for road lighting
  4. Offering a better visibility

How concrete pavements contribute to a reduction of fuel consumption: https://www.eupave.eu/new-fact-sheet-how-concrete-pavement-contribute-to-a-reduction-of-fuel-consumption/
The topic of the second fact sheet is “Less Fuel Consumption”:
Fuel consumption is not only influenced by the vehicle (type of engine, aerodynamic profile, tyres,…) but also by the pavement it is driving on. The factors related to the surface of the pavement are the evenness, the surface texture and the deflection. While texture and evenness can be made the same for asphalt and concrete roads, this is not the case for deflection.
