Regional Leaders Shine at National Concrete Pavement Excellence Awards

The Oklahoma/Arkansas (OK/AR) Chapter of the American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) celebrated a major victory this year as two regional projects secured Gold honors at the 36th Annual National Excellence in Concrete Pavements awards writes Brent Burwell for ACPA. This prestigious program evaluates projects from across North America, rewarding those that demonstrate exceptional engineering, durability, and finishing. By bringing home top honors, the chapter has reinforced its reputation for maintaining some of the highest standards in the transportation infrastructure industry.

One of the standout performers was the I-35 reconstruction project in Garvin County, which earned both a Gold award in the Rural Divided Highways category and the esteemed Best in Show Innovation award. Managed by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation with Duit Construction and MacArthur Associated Consultants, the project was recognized for its creative approach to safety and efficiency. To maintain two lanes of traffic throughout construction, the team utilized a custom overhead conveyor system that eliminated over 7,000 truck trips through live traffic lanes and recycled 100% of the existing concrete on-site, drastically reducing environmental impact.

Aviation infrastructure also received national acclaim with the Taxiway C Reconstruction at the Bill & Hillary Clinton National Airport taking home Gold. Executed by Weaver Bailey Contractors and designed by the engineering firm Garver, this project demonstrated the precision required for high-stress airfield environments. Together, these awards highlight the successful collaboration between regional owners, contractors, and engineers to deliver infrastructure that balances technical innovation with long-term performance for the traveling public.
