Innovations on the Surface: EUPAVE Hosts 11th Workshop on Best Practices in Concrete Paving

On Tuesday, May 20, 2026, the European Concrete Paving Association (EUPAVE) successfully hosted its 11th Workshop on Best Practices in Concrete Paving. Held as a dynamic hybrid event at its Brussels offices and online, the workshop focused on the diverse world of concrete surface technologies and decorative applications in modern infrastructure. Luc Rens, Technical Director of EUPAVE, moderated the event, guiding attendees through a robust agenda of industry experts. Pascal Buys, owner of Robuco, opened the sessions by highlighting the noise-reducing capabilities, durability, and skid resistance of exposed aggregate concrete surfaces. Expanding on this theme, Nathalie Balfroid of Febelcem demonstrated how these same exposed aggregate techniques can elevate urban environments by seamlessly blending aesthetics with structural functionality.

The technical deep-dive continued with Tim Alte-Teigeler of Otto Alte-Teigeler GmbH, who shared practical field insights into advanced surface treatment techniques, including grinding, grooving, Next Generation Concrete Surfaces (NGCS), and high-pressure water jetting. Luc Rens then took the podium to examine finishing methods such as micromilling, bush hammering, and polished concrete surfaces aimed at optimizing roadway appearance and performance. Concluding the speaker lineup, Elia Boonen from the Belgian Road Research Centre introduced newly developed Belgian guidelines for pattern-imprinted concrete in decorative and urban projects. Following an interactive Q&A session and an in-person networking cocktail reception, EUPAVE extended its gratitude to all participants. For those looking to review the technical insights and cutting-edge methodologies shared during the event, the featured presentations are available for download.
