The Airport Concrete Pavement Technology Program (ACPTP) has issued RFP ACPTP 2026-16, “Silicon-Based Surface Treatments for Airfield Concrete Pavements.” The project seeks to evaluate spray-applied silicon-based treatments—including silica nano-products and silicate densifiers—for their potential to improve the durability of hardened concrete airfield pavements. The research will examine how these products interact with concrete, their documented field performance, and their potential benefits for surface hardening, sealing, crack healing, and other surface improvements.
The selected research team will conduct a literature review, laboratory and field evaluations, develop performance-based testing and qualification procedures, and produce guidance for selecting and applying these treatments on airfield pavements. The project has up to $500,000 in funding and a 36-month performance period, with an anticipated notice to proceed of January 1, 2027. Proposals are due October 6, 2026, by 4:00 p.m. Central Time.
