The MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub (CSHub), housed within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has announced an opening for a Postdoctoral Associate to lead research on estimating and optimizing the economic and environmental impacts of pavements and pavement networks. The selected candidate will advance life-cycle performance modeling under evolving climate and hazard conditions by utilizing life-cycle assessment (LCA), machine learning, and optimization methods. In addition to conducting state-of-the-art research on cement and concrete systems and producing scholarly publications, the role involves collaborating with CSHub staff to develop content that translates complex findings for both scientific and non-scientific audiences.
While candidates must hold a PhD in Civil Engineering or a closely related field, preferred experience working directly with the cement and concrete industry will be a distinct advantage for applicants looking to lead these sustainability initiatives. This industry experience, combined with a strong familiarity with computational modeling tools for analyzing pavement behavior under diverse conditions, positions candidates to translate research directly into practical sector applications. Qualified applicants should also possess expertise in life-cycle cost analysis, pavement simulation, deep reinforcement learning, or physics-informed modeling frameworks, alongside a proven track record of effective communication through peer-reviewed journals and oral presentations.
