An upcoming Technology Tuesday webinar titled “Lessons Learned From the Largest Pavement Experiment in the Known Universe” will take place on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM EST. The session will explore the history and core findings of the Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) SPS-2 projects, recognized as the largest concrete pavement study ever conducted. Built between 1992 and 2000 across 14 states to span diverse climatic conditions, this marquee experiment features over 200 test sections specifically designed to evaluate critical concrete pavement design elements. Participants will gain insights into how key variables—including base type, drainage, thickness, flexural strength, and lane width—have influenced structural performance throughout decades of active monitoring from original construction to the present.
The presentation will also showcase takeaways developed through Transportation Pooled Fund Study 5(291), which organized multiple SPS-2 Tech Days featuring classroom sessions and field visits to active project sites, as well as 11 technical reports documenting section performance. Led by industry expert presenters Larry Scofield, P.E., Director of Engineering & Research at the International Grooving and Grinding Association and Pavement Innovation at the American Concrete Pavement Association, alongside Kevin Senn, P.E., Principal at NCE, the session offers attendees a detailed overview of the practical lessons learned from this unprecedented national research endeavor.
