Progress under FHWA Cooperative Agreement—”Concrete even more durable & stronger than before …”

The GOAL?
Concrete even more durable & stronger than before …
in spite of increasing challenges!

Work is continuing to advance under the
Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) /
National Concrete Pavement Technology Center (CP Tech Center) cooperative agreement
“Advancing Concrete Pavement Technology Solutions”

A second year of funding has been released and FHWA has recently approved the final 2 work orders addressing “Accelerated Construction Techniques” and “Nondestructive Testing and Real-Time Techniques”—thus, all 6 work areas are now active.

Subtasks related to “Accelerated Construction Techniques” include the following:

● Peer exchanges for precast concrete

● Innovative concrete overlays

● Roller-compacted concrete (RCC) for high-speed roadways

● Concrete project streamlining/acceleration

● Optimizing concrete pavement opening to traffic

Subtasks on “Nondestructive Testing and Real-Time Techniques” are as follows:

● Noncontact acoustic array for assessment of concrete overlays (a proof-of-concept noncontact technology to identify/assess potential delamination)

● Real-time smoothness (field demonstrations along with implementation and technical support for real-time pavement smoothness evaluation technology)

With the exception of the RCC project to be conducted in the second year of Work Order 5, work on the above subtasks is anticipated to begin July, 2020.

The goal? Concrete even more durable and stronger than before, in spite of increasing challenges.
