U.S. “2022 Nat’l Engineers Week”: Feb. 20 – Feb. 26: Engage Kids, “Future City” Competitions, Events, Chats, & more!

2022 National Engineers Week
2022 Theme: “Reimagining the Possible”
Sunday February 20 to Saturday February 26, 2022

Reimagining the Possible”: Engineers create new possibilities throughout time
—from green buildings to fuel-efficient cars to life-saving vaccines.
Engineers work together to develop new technologies, products and opportunities that change how we live.
Inspire the next generation by celebrating all the ways engineers turn dreams into reality
by reimagining what seems impossible to become the Possible!

The National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) stands today
as the only national organization committed to addressing the professional concerns
of licensed Professional Engineers (PEs) across all disciplines.

In 1934, a group of professional engineers met in New York City to establish an organization dedicated to the non-technical concerns of licensed professional engineers …

Founded by NSPE in 1951, ENGINEERS WEEK is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers. DiscoverE works to provide every student with a shared STEM experience and the resources, programs, and connections to improve the understanding of engineering through a united voice and a global distribution network.

… The only event of its kind—it is a time for you to:
• Celebrate how engineers make a difference in our world
• Add your voice to the conversation about the need for engineers, technicians, and technologists
• Engage students in engineering

ENGAGE KIDS—
—Most kids don’t know any engineers or technicians. And they don’t really know what engineers do. This leads to interesting assumptions—like engineers sit in a cubicle doing math problems all day. Whether you meet with students in-person or virtually, you can spark their interest by talking to them about engineering, doing STEM activities, and sharing your story. During Engineers Week or anytime during the year, we invite you to:

Visit a classroom or after school
Set up a virtual or in-person classroom visit. A few hours of your time can engage a group of children in a rewarding engineering experience! As a STEM professional, your job is interesting, creative, and makes a difference in the world. When you share that with kids, you help them discover engineering and learn how it touches the world around them. With options for in-person or virtual visits, there are lots of different ways to reach students
What would you like to do? To get started and decide what you want and are comfortable doing, answer a few of these questions about yourself:
• What is your availability?
• Virtual or In-Person Experience?
• What can you offer?
– Career presentation
– Virtual introduction to engineering activities
– In-Person introduction to engineering activities visit to
– Longer mentorship arrangement with the class
– Longer mentorship arrangement with a few students?
• Volunteer alone or With a Partner?
– Colleague
– Seasoned volunteers
– Professors
Host an engineering event

VOLUNTEER / EVENTS:
for educators—Organize a team, facilitate learning, and watch your students’ excitement grow.
for mentors—Engineering and technical professionals provide expertise, guidance, and passion!
for students—Students love Future City! Find out what you need to know as a participant.
for parents—Support your children as they take on this transformative project.

FUTURE CITY COMPETITION!
—Future City is a project-based learning program where students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades
imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future.
An Astronaut’s Message to Future City Teams—Ricky Arnold is a NASA astronaut and educator who has lived on the International Space Station. Check out his special message to Future City teams about designing a city on the Moon!

SHARE VIRTUAL CHATS/VLOGS with CHANGE MAKERS—
—Expose students to different engineers each month
Calling all ELEMENTARY and MIDDLE SCHOOL KIDS!
Tune into our monthly series “Chats with Change Makers”

Hosted by ASCE’s high school junior host Tiffany, meet STEM professionals who are working hard to change the world. Teachers and parents are invited to tune-in along with their students to meet an engineer and ask questions. At the end of each session, the engineer guest issues a hands-on STEM challenge that kids can do away from their screens.
2022 Schedule – Join the CHATS on Thursdays each month!

NSPE
NSPE was established to realize a simple but vital goal: create an inclusive, nontechnical organization dedicated to the interests of licensed professional engineers, regardless of practice area, that would protect engineers (and the public) from unqualified practitioners, build public recognition for the profession, and stand against unethical practices and inadequate compensation.

Much has changed since then, but NSPE’s fundamental commitment to this vision, articulated at its founding, remains unchanged. The NSPE Strategic Plan—including our Vision, Mission, Values, and Goals—is developed by the NSPE Board of Directors in collaboration with NSPE’s representative House of Delegates. It is not a static document. Rather, it is a commitment to ongoing, open, and transparent strategic planning and execution.
